Good lesson horses are the key to any successful riding program. Dependable horses, suited to the level of the rider, are crucial to building confidence and self-esteem, as well as helping the rider to improve their skills. Many of our horses have been with us for years. Occassionally we welcome new additions selected to work into and remain in the program for years to come. Our lesson horses are loved and valued partners. Spruce Meadow's horses are suited to all levels of riding and are also successful in competition. We currently have 16 horses available for our lesson and lease program.
All of our horses are given the best care possible. They are turned out daily (weather permitting) for their physical and mental well-being. They are fed grain twice a day, and receive hay and have their water buckets filled three times a day. During the summer months, horses are fly-sprayed before being turned out or ridden to protect them from annoying insects. Horses are given at least one day a week off to prevent them being overworked. All horses receive regular veterinarian and farrier care to keep them in good health.
Meet the horses! (Click the horse's name to see a picture open in a new window.)
Maynard is a 32 year old dark bay Thoroughbred. He is our oldest horse and lives in the first stall on the right when you enter our front barn!
Trixie is a sweet five year old mare. She is planning on becoming part of our lesson program once she gets a little more training.
Friday is another friendly member of our lesson program. She is nice and she is a fun ride. She has become a favorite among our campers.
Pumpkin is a 12 year old chestnut pony. She is an excellent jumper and very athletic. Pumpkin can jump 2'6" courses and has jumped as high as 3'6".
Star is a 15 year old bay Quarter Horse mare who is just under 14.2 hands, making her a pony. She is quiet, gentle, and obedient. Star is also a very neat jumper, having cleared 3'6" effortlessly. She is being half-leased.
Sage is a 16 year old palomino Quarter Horse mix gelding. Sage is a very energetic pony. He went to the Erie County Fair this past summer where he competed in the Large Pony division, jumping 3' courses. He is half-leased.
Chubby is a Shetland Pony gelding chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail. He is an adorable, friendly little pony who has truly earned his name! Chubby's hobbies include breaking out of the barn, wandering loose around the property, and breaking into the feed room.
Mattie is a 25 year old liver chestnut Morgan mare. She is a popular lesson horse and is a very neat little jumper.
Rascal is 22 year old gelding. Like Mattie, he is a liver chestnut Morgan. He can be somewhat challenging, so he really helps builds skills in students.
Teddy is a big sweet heart. Though he is tall, looks can be decieving; he is gentle, sweet and always tries his best to please you!
Aries is a beautiful member of our lesson program. He is an excellent horse for both beginners and advanced stundents. Though his appearence has its imperfections, he still maintains the image of a greek god.
Cisco is a 6 year old bay Quarter Horse gelding. Cisco is very cute, but still has a lot to learn.
Sparkles is a gray (not white!) Welsh pony in her late teens. She is another rescue horse. Sparkles foundered and, as a result, her feet are often sore, so she cannot give lessons.
Kismet is a 25 year old Thoroughbred rescue horse. His unique talents under saddle have recently been rediscovered by our young riders, and he has become quite popular with some of the more advanced students. Kismet was a successful racehorse, and he came to us after his career ended due to injury.
Molly is a beautiful dark bay mare. Though skinny when she came to us, Molly is now nice and round and more than eager to be a perefect lesson horse.
Lucky is a pretty 15 year old chestnut Thoroughbred mare. She is very fast and jumps easily. Lucky also makes a lovely dressage horse!
Chigger is a challanging member of our lesson program, however with consistant work he will be an excellent member of the lesson program.
